Jack’s Winning Words 9/3/21

“On Labor Day we honor the men and women who fought tirelessly for workers’ rights.”  (Elizabeth Esty)  The Gershwin musical, Strike Up the Band, is a tribute to America’s Working Class, people who are often branded as socialists because of their demands for better working conditions and benefits.  Part of the political divisions today occur due to disagreements on whether unions are good or bad.  Labor Day came into being in the late 1890s to give workers a one-day benefit.  That did not come easily.  But that’s in the past.  List in your mind the worker benefits you have, and then, Strike Up the Band!  ;-)  Jack.

FROM SR RD:   AMEN to your Winning Words, ever- positive-thinker, Jack!😊 ===JACK:  I always liked the term, Worker Priests.  I guess it's just taken for granted that sisters are workers, without needing the adjective.

FROM MD IN BS:  I don't think that unionization of educators, essential workers and government employee  has improved our society as a whole. When I was young, family gatherings were rife with  conversations about how those union workers were "ripping off" their employers. Such a sad life to live no initiative no pride. No unions for me except maybe farm and hospitality  workers.===JACK:  The pendulum swings both ways.  In order to understand the present, you have to know something about the past.  It's not a perfect world.  Some people once thought that it was OK to have slave labor.  A group of pastors once wanted me to join a movement to form a pastors' union.  I wasn't interested, but there are some situations where the clegy are under-compensated...and some where they are over-compensated.  I never had to ask for a raise.  ===MD:  Were nurses, teachers or police officers ever treated as slave labor? I understand the past and believe that the best of the best before people were stripped of their dignity, wanted no part of a union. Like you in your profession., I certainly wanted no part of sharing the fruits with underperformers.===JACK:  When I think of the past, I'm thinking waaay back.  As with most of our discussions, words get in the way.  In my mind, we both think that "a laborer is worthy of his hire."  In the "real" world, there's more than enough unfairness. ===MD:    It has served you well. One of my favorite classes was A Metaphysics of Being and God.===JACK:  So, your education did include more than numbers.  It appears as though you like to dicuss and to probe?  GOOD
