Jack’s Winning Words 8/2/21
“If you don’t try to win, you might as well hold the Olympics in somebody’s backyard.” (Jesse Owens) I saw an article about How to set up a Backyard Olympics. One of the events was “bean-bag-toss.” Another was “watermelon seed-spitting.” Are you a tosser or a spitter? Trying to win is part of the Olympic Games, but in discussions with others where there is disagreement, trying to win usually means that everyone loses. ;-) JackFROM GUSTIE: Did I I tell you that Suni Lee’s coaches belong to our
church? And she got the scholarship to Midwest Gym which was a memorial
for Gina Morey—a 16 yr old gymnast who was killed by a garbage truck? Her
grandma is a very good friend of mine. Only the husband got to go with
Suni to Tokyo because he is her coach on the bars.===JACK: I'm pleased to have this information...sorry for Gina... memorial gifts allow the person to live on, in a way. Chalk up a plus for your church in having Suni's coaches a members.
FROM SUNSHINE: Sometime
between 1947 & 1951 when I was in high school - Senn, inner city Chicago -
Jesse Owens gave an inspiring talk there . . . inspiring to me since I was on
the track team and he talked about his olympic feat in Germany much to the
dismay of Hitler.===JACK: What a memorable experience...to see and hear one of the greatest of the Olympians. What track vent was your specialty?
FROM BLAZING OAKS: Truly boggles the mind!! It's a shame there has to be so many losers after all their effort, but what a great feeling to be a WINNER! Most children are obsessed with
winning in early years of game playing, but have to learn to be gracious about losing, because not everyone can win
every time!! Mu heart goes out to Simone Biles who worked SO
HARD and yet is cheering the others on from the sidelines!! THAT wold be devastating! I think as we age, we
mellow, and are better at compromise, don't you? !===JACK: I think that there's more to the Biles' story than we know. I'm impressed with the Suni Lee story, because the Mongs have had such difficulty assimilating into the Minn/Wis society. In fact, every event seems to have a "special" story connected to it.
FROM CL: How relevant! Thinking beyond the Olympics, good food for
thought!===JACK: Anything that makes us think is GOOD food for thought
