“Do you believe in rock and roll? Can music save your mortal soul?” (Don McLean) Many will know the background of today’s quote,..how, in 1959 a plane crashed in Iowa. I’m told that when aircraft are in emergency conditions air-controllers often ask, “How many souls are on board?”, not people, but souls. Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and 21-yr-old pilot, Roger Peterson were “the souls” on that fateful day... the day the music died. ;-) Jack
FROM WALMART REV: Interesting blog this morning, Pastor...I hear of that particular plane crash and loss of lives often, perhaps it going down in Iowa makes me think it may be part of the reason?! The plane carrying Ricky Nelson is another...if my memory serves me correctly there was some drugs and flame basing going on in the plane when that occurred.===JACK: The crash was weather related. The pilot should never have taken off. A substitute band played Buddy Holly's concert... 15-yr-old Bobby Vee and his high school buddies were the subs and were a hit. Bobby Vee spent most of his life in St. Joseph. His children have a band...the Killer Vees.
FROM MN YOGA GURU: Wasn't it " Spirit" Lake Iowa where they were performing? ===JACK: The crash happened at Clear Lake, Iowa. They were on their way to Moorhead, MN, to perform a concert. Bobby Vee and his friends were the replacement band. Vee lived most of his life in St. Joseph.
FROM ST PAUL IN MESA: Jack, you may not believe this but the daughter of the man who owned that plane was a member of SOTV for many years. her Dad ran an air service company out of Mason City, Iowa. as far as anyone could figure, there was icing on the wings as the plane did not stay airborne for very long. it may also have been too heavily loaded. there was one member of the group who could not go with them and he, of course, lived to see another day.===JACK: The passengers chose the plane, because the bus was too uncomfortable. One passenger got a seat, because he won a coin toss.
