Jack’s Winning Words 9/26/18
“Believe those who are seeking the truth.  Doubt those who find it.”  (Andre Gide)  You may remember Diogenes the Cynic who carried a lamp around searching for an honest man.  Today he’s been replaced by Snopes, the website that fact-checks stuff on the internet.  Last week a friend posted something on Facebook that didn’t seem right me.  I “snoped” it, and it was fake.  Wouldn’t it be great to fact-check some of the opinions expressed on TV these days?   ;-)  Jack

FROM ST PAUL IN ST PAUL:  Amen to that===JACK:  I remember hearing a minister being called, "A Pompous Pulpit Prancer."  ...and it wasn't you or me.===PAUL:  sounds like Jimmy Swaggart.     blessings,===JACK:  Yes, Swaggart is a good name for one of "those."  BTW, you probably know that Swaggart and Jerry Lee Lewis are cousins.  How would you like to have Jerry Lee as your church pianist?

When I was starting a new church in Michigan, the pianist for our worship services was a piano/bar performer.  He would sit on the piano bench sideways with his legs crossed.  One Sunday he played, "Send In the Clowns," as I processed to the altar.

FROM CS IN RO:  Thumbs up!

FROM HONEST JOHN:  If we are to believe those who are seeking the truth, then it follows that the truth must exist.    Thank God.===JACK:  Truth wears many disguises and  has many hiding places.===JOHN:  FROM HONEST JOHN:  Neither of those statements denies that it exists ...that is the point of Socrates....as opposed to the Relativists who deny that it exists.===JACK:  Oh, I believe that it exists,,,but we don't always recognize it when we see it.  What's it look like?===JOHN: The Word.===JACK: Even theologians see different kinds of Truth in the Word.  (bu, I know what you mean...I think)

FROM FACEBOOK LIZ:  so you’re on facebook?===JACK:  You've heard of "Secret Friends," haven't you?  I read, but I don't post.===LIZ: ha, a fb creeper! i’d friend request you, but you would not like most of what i have to say...===JACK:  Are you saying that I'm creepy?  I like using e-mail, because, for example, I'd like my "conversations" to be more personal than they'd be on Facebook.

FROM WALMART REV:  Especially, Facebook and Twitter 0:-/===JACK:  Mark Twain is supposed to have said, "If you don’t read the newspaper you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed."  Snopes says: "FAKE!"  The same would be said if he tweeted or posted.

FROM GDJ IN WISCONSIN:  Krista and I have been enjoying two weeks of solace with deer and eagles on a beautiful lake just south of Eagle River. Not that far from Merrill.  Peace to you this day as God has chosen to wake us again.   Fact-Checking Trump’s Speech to the United Nations https://nyti.ms/2N2lHfa===JACK:  I came to love Central/Northern Wisconsin after meeting Mary there in 1954...and commenting on your "fact-check"...The UN's response: "Ha, Ha, Ha!"===GDJ:  Love it!!

FROM RJP IN NAPLES:  Sadly, believe little trust no one has become our mantra even Snopes has been wrong on occasion. The Internet is destroying people's trust in virtually everything. So trust and family good friends I believe in yourself ===JACK:  I've made mistakes.  Perhaps you have made one or two yourself.  I'm a believer that the internet has been a great invention.  The main problem comes from the people who post information and the people who believe (without checking) whatever they read.  It might be interesting, too, to have snopes available when listening to some sermons.  OOPS!  Did I say that?

FROM BLAZING OAKS:  Indeed!  Politifact.com cks  politician's truths and lies, and our newspaper has begun to post their findings, regarding the Governor's candidates for election. Quite an eye-opener, and it's had its effect on their ads recently!  Wish we had more courageous people who did this. They ck. Trump, too, and so many of his statements are at least half true, and many are "pants on fire" lies :-(===JACK:  I'm not so much concerned about what the politicians are saying as I am about why they are saying it.  Constructive criticism seems to have been forgotten.  Imaginative thinking for the good of the country?  Where is it?

FROM THE SHARK:  Amen

FROM OUTHOUSE JUDY:  Facts???  What are the facts?  Will we ever know?  I think a lot of the are fake but God knows all.  We mere mortals tend to mix up facts all the time.  If you ask one of my sisters or brother about the past, each one will tell it a little different.  We were all there but we all were looking at different things!
===JACK:  There are scientific facts...and then there are opinions about the facts...and then there are opinions about the opinions which some people take as factual.  "Ah, there's the rub!"===JUDY:  Yes, you are 💯 % correct!

FROM DAZ IN CO:  I always am suspect of stories the start  "The True Story of ......."===JACK:  Are there any TRUE stories of the Civil War?  As an aside, Jack Pearl was a comedian in my growing up years.  On his show, if someone questioned the truth of some experience that he was bragging about...he'd say, "Vas you der Sharlie?"  The phrase caught on, and you'd here people repeat it in conversation.  So, if someone questions you when your relating a Civil War story, respond: "Vas you der Sharlie?"===DAZ: Interesting you bring that up because you’ve got be careful about who you believe about events and battles. Generals who did dumb things by most standards would write to try to convince you it was smart. That make reading fun.===JACK:  Oftentimes historians don’t report history, they make (up) history.
