Winning Words 8/3/12
“None is so deaf, as those who would not hear.”  (Australian Proverb)  I was surprised to learn that Australia was one of the original participants in the modern Olympics.  Of course there are other “strange” things about that country.  It has 1500 species of spiders; its mountains receive more snow than the Swiss Alps; the first native-born governor was Jewish; the 2000 Sydney Olympics have been called, “the best ever.”    ;-)  Jack

FROM HR IN MICHIGAN:  My Mother, of blessed memory, asked me during the summer Olympics being held in Sydney when it was winter here, “what month is it in Australia?” We never let her forgot that question.  She loved sports and was an avid Pistons fan.////FROM JACK:  We all have mother stories.  My mother was an avid Cubs fan and attended a game on her 98th birthday.  The radio broadcasters interviewed her on that day.  One of them commented: "She sure doesn't look like she's 98."  Harry Carray chimed in, "She doesn't look like she's 18, either"  There's an old song that I know..."Precious memories, unseen angels From somewhere to my soul How they linger ever near me And the sacred scenes unfold."

FROM OUTHOUSE JUDY:  We have a lot of deafness in our family.  Thankfully, it has skipped this generation.  Australia is on our Bucket List of places to go.  It also has the 10 most deadly snakes and 10 most deadly spiders!  But it is also looks like a beautiful country with a very friendly people!////FROM JACK:  I guess you already know that an outhouse in Australia is called, a dunny.

FROM SAINT JAMES:  Those of us who think they hear often don't...////FROM JACK:  This song, from Tanzania,  is in our church hymnal.  "Listen, listen, God is calling,    through the Word inviting,   offering forgiveness,   comfort and joy."  Sometimes in church we sing the words, but don't hear what they say.

FROM PLAIN FOLKS CHESTER:  The  Outback serves the best salad in town. Try their onion "blossom."////FROM JACK:  The OB is one of my favorite places to eat.  One is located about 2 miles from our house.  My grandson even saw one when he was in Australia.

FROM TAMPA SHIRL:  Yes,  Australia is a beautiful and country, and its people are interesting and hard working. The young people take a year off to travel the world if they are able to.    We did Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, where the World's Fair was that year, and the Great Barrier Reef.  The unique animals, the beautiful mountains, coasts, and reefs were outstanding, but, mostly, the people were very friendly and helpful.////FROM JACK:  Did you happen to meet Crocodile Dundee?  I liked the way he talked Australian.
