Jack’s Winning Words 2/5/07
“ Let parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence.”
(Plato) Where did you learn reverence, and what does the word mean to you? This quote also reminds me of these words: “Virtue is learned at mother’s knee. Vice is learned at other joints.” ;-) Jack

What we learned from our parents was the importance of people trying to keep together, that life is not easy--there are a lot of adversities--but, if you stick together and try to work it out, people can surmount the difficulties. They didn't talk a lot about the Bible, but I think the Bible's teachings formed the basis for their values. It's a reverence for life and relationships as opposed to the destructiveness of division and separation.

I believe Denis Rainey http://fltoday.org/ has said, ""Our children are messengers we send into a time we will not see." As I listen to the stories from the the Indianapolis Colts, last night's Super Bowl winner, I hear example after example of character and unselfishness that was "instilled" by someone, probably a parent, teacher or coach.

Dwight Freeny (defensive star) had flown his high school coach to the game. Star receiver Reggie Wayne brought his 9th grade geometry teacher.

And of course the quarterback Peyton Manning hailed it as a team win. The coach Tony Dungee credited the "Lord." The team owner Robert Irskins first words after winning what he had sought for 35 years were to ask for prayer for the Central Florida Tornado victims.

It seems like the "spirit of good parenting" flows through the Colts organization.

I will remember the character and class of the Colts in victory, long after the score and the statistics are forgotten.
